On August 3, 2026, Denver International Airport recorded a peak temperature of 102 degrees Fahrenheit before a cold front swept through, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to impose a ground stop. Wind gusts reached up to 40 mph, while temperatures dropped 50 to 60 degrees overnight, creating unstable atmospheric conditions and severe turbulence affecting flight operations at Denver.

Flight Diversions and Ground Stop Details

The FAA directed the diversion of 29 flights originally scheduled to land at Denver International Airport. Most diverted aircraft were redirected to Colorado Springs Airport. Airlines affected included Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and SkyWest Airlines. These diversions were directly due to

the extreme weather conditions following the heat wave and rapid temperature decline.

Passenger Impact and Injuries

Several passengers on inbound flights experienced injuries attributed to the turbulence and were transported by ambulance to medical facilities. Five passengers received medical treatment before deplaning, with at least one passenger reported in stable condition following transport. Passengers described the turbulence as severe, with some reporting it as the worst they had experienced. Flight crews encountered operational challenges including crew timing out, leading some passengers to arrange alternate transportation.

Delays, Cancellations, and Schedule Disruption

By the end of the day on August 3, 40% of outbound flights from Denver International were delayed due

to strong wind conditions. Inbound flight delays affected 32% of arrivals, with disruptions extending into the following morning. Approximately 3% of total flights were canceled. These interruptions caused missed connections and extended waiting periods, with some scheduled departures delayed by up to three hours past their planned time.

Weather Context and Operational Challenges

The combination of a historic heat wave hitting 102 degrees Fahrenheit and a sudden cold front moving over Denver generated highly unstable flight conditions. High winds and rapid temperature changes increased hazard levels, compounding Denver International Airport’s typical turbulence caused by wind shear and mountainous terrain. Smoke from Pacific Northwest wildfires further

degraded air quality during the weather event.

By Tuesday morning, August 4, temperatures had decreased to between 75 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit, and turbulence patterns shifted northeast toward the Great Lakes and Northeast regions. Flight conditions improved, with heat advisories along the I-25 corridor lifted by 6 p.m. on August 3.
