The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) implemented a ground stop at Denver International Airport (DEN) on August 14, 2026, resulting in the diversion of 29 flights to Colorado Springs Airport (COS). Severe weather with high winds and unstable conditions forced airlines to reroute inbound flights to nearby airports.

Temperatures at Denver International Airport soared to a record 102°F earlier that day, surpassing highs last recorded in 1878. This heat wave collided with a cold front arriving at approximately 6:00 PM, leading to a rapid temperature drop of 50 to 60 degrees overnight. Wind gusts reached up to 40 miles per hour,

and smoke from wildfires in the Pacific Northwest contributed to poor air quality and hazy skies across the region.

Passenger Impact and Turbulence Injuries

The severe weather caused intense turbulence on inbound flights, with passengers reporting it as the most violent they had experienced. Five passengers required medical assistance during or shortly after disembarking, with one individual transported to a local hospital in stable condition. Delays affected 40% of outbound flights and 32% of inbound flights at Denver throughout August 14. Cancelations accounted for 3% of total flight traffic at the airport for the day.

Several passengers reported extended waits on diverted aircraft and missed

connecting flights due to prolonged delays, with some flights delayed as late as midnight. One traveler described being held airborne for an hour before their connection departed and experiencing multiple subsequent delays on rescheduled flights. Others whose flights were canceled or crews timed out chose ground transportation alternatives, including ride-share services such as Uber.

Airline Operations and Flight Repositioning

Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and SkyWest Airlines operated the majority of the diverted flights. Following the ground stop, multiple aircraft repositioned from Colorado Springs back to Denver as conditions stabilized. The diversions and flight crew duty limitations generated additional operational challenges for these carriers, contributing to

schedule disruptions and passenger inconvenience.

Denver’s Typical Turbulence and FAA Safety Measures

Denver International Airport regularly experiences turbulence due to high-altitude mountain geography and wind shear. On August 14, the combination of record heat and an abrupt cold front created highly unstable atmospheric conditions, escalating turbulence severity and wind speeds. The FAA’s ground stop was implemented to manage air traffic safely amid these adverse conditions and mitigate risk to aircraft operations and passenger safety.
