Southwest Airlines experienced 249 delays and three cancellations, while SkyWest recorded 157 delays and 10 cancellations. Frontier Airlines
canceled eight flights amid the ground stop.
Average delays for inbound flights were about two hours after the ground stop was lifted, with an overall average delay of approximately 1 hour 44 minutes during the disruption. As of 4:30 p.m., The Denver Post reported 91 cancellations and 708 delays, including 38 canceled and 121 delayed flights at SkyWest, 34 canceled and 265 delayed flights at United, 14 canceled and 211 delayed flights at Southwest, and five canceled and 49 delayed flights at Frontier.

The ground stop followed severe thunderstorms that brought heavy rain, hail, and localized flash flooding across the
Denver metro and Front Range region. The National Weather Service issued a severe thunderstorm watch for the Front Range until 9 p.m. on August 15, 2026. Meteorologist Callie Zanandrie of CBS Colorado reported rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches in 30 minutes, with risks for flash flooding, strong winds, and large hail.
This severe weather is linked to a surge of monsoonal moisture, a seasonal pattern that typically generates fast-forming afternoon storms over Colorado’s High Plains in late summer. Denver International Airport’s high elevation and exposure to convective storm activity increase its vulnerability to weather disruptions.

the ground stop at 4 p.m. local time after storm conditions improved enough to allow arrivals to resume. However, residual weather impacts continued to disrupt flights at Denver International Airport through the evening. The National Weather Service maintained the severe thunderstorm watch for the Front Range until 9 p.m., signaling a continued threat of hazardous conditions.
Following the ground stop lift, average arrival delays remained near two hours, and airlines continued reporting cancellations and delays consistent with ongoing operational challenges caused by the storms.
