The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) imposed a ground stop at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) on Thursday, August 20, 2026. The ground stop restricts arriving and departing flights at BWI until weather conditions improve.

Severe weather, including tornado and severe thunderstorm watches across the Washington D.C., Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area, was the cause of the FAA’s decision. This action has led to delays and cancellations of flights operating through BWI. The FAA also implemented a ground stop at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) earlier the same day, which was lifted before this report.
