The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop at Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport (BWI) on Thursday, August 20, 2026, due to severe weather conditions in the region. A ground stop had also been placed earlier at DCA airport but was subsequently lifted.
Severe weather, including tornado and severe thunderstorm watches issued for the DMV area, prompted the FAA’s action. The ground stop at BWI led to widespread flight delays and cancellations for travelers at the airport on that day.
