On July 27, 2026, the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) issued a ground stop advisory for LaGuardia Airport (LGA) in New York City. Delta Air Lines experienced the highest number of flight cancellations out of LaGuardia that morning. Concurrently, the FAA implemented operational restrictions affecting arrivals at John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), along with delays at Newark Liberty International and Philadelphia International Airports.
Flight Delays and Traffic Management at JFK and Regional Airports
The FAA activated a Traffic Management Program for arriving flights at JFK due to staffing shortages at the air traffic control facility. The program has caused average arrival delays of 2 hours and 29 minutes for incoming
flights. Similar slowdowns were applied to manage traffic into Newark and Philadelphia International Airports as well. Passengers should expect delays and possible ground holds for flights to or from these airports as a result of these federal restrictions.
Causes and Recent History of Flight Disruptions
The combination of staffing shortages at air traffic control centers serving the New York metropolitan and Philadelphia areas alongside weather conditions prompted the FAA’s restrictions. Earlier in July, the region faced over 500 flight cancellations and approximately 4,000 delays attributed to the same causes. The ground stop at LaGuardia means all outbound flights destined for the airport remained on the ground at
their origin until the stop was lifted.
“Due to STAFFING / STAFFING, there is a Traffic Management Program in effect for traffic arriving at John F Kennedy International Airport, New York, NY (JFK). This is causing some arriving flights to be delayed an average of 2 hours and 29 minutes,” the FAA stated.
