The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continues a ground stop at Newark Liberty International Airport through 10:15 p.m. on August 8, 2026, due to severe thunderstorms impacting the tri-state region.
As of 9:45 p.m., FlightAware data reported 930 flight cancellations and over 1,000 delays at Newark, John F. Kennedy International Airport, and LaGuardia Airport combined. While the FAA lifted ground stops earlier at JFK and LaGuardia, residual delays persist at both airports.
Regional Travel Disruptions Expand Beyond Airports
In addition to airport disruptions, NJ Transit suspended its rail services across New Jersey due to the storms. These suspensions further compound travel difficulties in and around the tri-state
area.
The thunderstorms, which have affected the tri-state region for a second consecutive day, continue to cause widespread cancellations and delays, particularly at Newark Airport where the FAA maintains the ground stop. Operators at JFK and LaGuardia airports are still managing ongoing flight delays despite resuming departures and arrivals.
