Fincantieri officially delivered Explora III to Explora Journeys in July 2026, marking the third ship added to MSC Group’s luxury cruise brand. Explora III is the cruise line’s first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessel and is 63 feet longer than its two sister ships, Explora I and Explora II.

Naming Ceremony and Key Participants

The naming ceremony took place in Barcelona with godmother Cristina Ozores, a marine educator and National Geographic Educator, officiating the event by blessing and naming the ship. Pierfrancesco Vago, MSC Group’s Cruise Division executive chairman; Anna Nash, president of Explora Journeys; and José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona,

delivered speeches during the ceremony. The night also featured a performance by Sister Sledge, with Kathy Sledge sharing the stage.

Preview Cruise and Initial Operations

Following the delivery, Explora III conducted an exclusive five-night preview voyage departing from Genoa and arriving in Civitavecchia. After completing this initial cruise, the ship relocated to Barcelona for its inaugural celebrations and formal introduction to the market.

Ship Design and Accommodation Features

Explora III offers the highest public space-per-guest ratio in the Explora Journeys fleet. The ship expands onboard accommodations with an increased collection of Ocean Penthouses, Ocean Residences, and two Owner’s Residences measuring 3,391 square feet each. New and enhanced venues onboard include

The Conservatory Pool & Bar, a redesigned Crema Café, an Outdoor Cigar Lounge, and a Malt Whisky Bar.

Official Statements and Fleet Development

Anna Nash described the naming of Explora III as “a momentous occasion that reflects both the trajectory of our fleet and our steadfast commitment to shaping the future of ultra-elegant ocean travel.” She added that the ship is “conceived as a destination in her own right,” showcasing greater space, design, gastronomy, and wellbeing while fostering the brand’s unique Ocean State of Mind.

Explora III’s debut signifies the midpoint in Explora Journeys’ fleet expansion plan, with ships Explora IV, V, and VI currently

under construction at different shipyards.
