Explora Journeys added its largest cruise ship, Explora III, to its fleet with a naming ceremony at the Port of Barcelona in August 2026. The ship was delivered ahead of schedule in July 2026 by Fincantieri and features LNG propulsion, marking the line’s first vessel using this technology. The launch event in Barcelona included speeches from Pierfrancesco Vago, executive chairman of MSC Group’s Cruise Division; Anna Nash, president of Explora Journeys; José Alberto Carbonell, president of the Port of Barcelona; and Cristina Ozores, marine educator and National Geographic Educator, who served as the ship’s godmother and performed the naming ritual.
An exclusive five-night preview cruise from Genoa to Civitavecchia took place before the ship’s official relocation to Barcelona. The ceremony was highlighted by a performance from disco group Sister Sledge, featuring Kathy Sledge.
Explora III’s Design and Amenities
The vessel measures 63 feet longer than its two predecessors, Explora I and Explora II, allowing more extensive onboard space with the highest public space-to-guest ratio across the fleet. Explora III expands the ship’s accommodations with a broader range of Ocean Penthouses and Ocean Residences, including two Owner’s Residences of 3,391 square feet each.
New and upgraded venues aboard Explora III include an enlarged Conservatory Pool &
Bar, a redesigned Crema Café, an Outdoor Cigar Lounge, and a Malt Whisky Bar, enhancing the onboard guest experience across dining and leisure options.
Fleet Expansion and Strategic Importance
Explora III is the third ship in Explora Journeys’ planned six-ship luxury series under the MSC Group. Its delivery signifies the midpoint in the company’s fleet development, with Explora IV, V, and VI currently at varying stages of construction across different shipyards.
The LNG-powered ship exemplifies MSC Group’s push into the luxury cruise market while incorporating sustainable propulsion technologies. The expanded design features on Explora III further differentiate the brand’s offerings within the ultra-luxury sector.
