Low water levels on European rivers have led to cancellations and itinerary adjustments for multiple river cruise lines during 2026, with major disruption on the Danube and Rhine.
Danube and Rhine River Levels Reach Historic Lows
The Danube River near Budapest and in Romania recorded the lowest water levels since 1996 in August 2026 amid ongoing droughts and heatwaves across Europe. The Rhine River, including the Rhine Gorge section, also suffered critically low water levels, restricting cruise navigation.
Due to these conditions, cruise companies including Riviera Travel, Viking, Tui River Cruises, Uniworld, Travelmarvel, and AmaWaterways have faced significant operational challenges, leading to cancellations and route changes.
Cancellations, Revised Routes, and Ship Swaps
Riviera Travel
cancelled three Danube departures in October 2026, citing an inability to meet guest experience standards under the low water constraints. Nine recent Rhine departures operated with revised itineraries focusing on the Moselle River rather than southern Rhine destinations such as Rüdesheim, Speyer, Strasbourg, and Breisach. Instead, stops now include Cochem, Bernkastel, Trier, and Koblenz.
Viking employed ship swaps to maintain itineraries, notably during the June 2026 Rhine Getaway from Amsterdam to Basel. Guests experienced a 24-hour docked stay in Koblenz, followed by a five-hour bus transfer to Strasbourg to board a sister ship. Viking’s strategy involves positioning sister vessels on
opposite sides of affected river sections to facilitate seamless guest and luggage transfers.
Additionally, some cruises began at alternate ports with higher water levels or used hotel stays with coach transfers, particularly around Budapest, a critical Danube embarkation point where ships struggled to dock.
Cruise Lines’ Response and Passenger Measures
Riviera Travel chief guest experience officer James Golding described 2026 as an unprecedented year for low water on Europe’s rivers. He emphasized that guests on significantly altered itineraries received future travel vouchers. Riviera Travel has introduced a Holiday Guarantee offering booking reassurance including personal contact, options to reschedule or refunds if changes are necessary.
Uniworld noted
that it monitors river conditions daily in close coordination with local authorities and regional partners, adapting itineraries as required while continuing scheduled sailings in France, Italy, and Portugal. Riviera Travel’s operations benefit from head office teams flying out to assist onboard sailings and keeping guests updated daily.
Travelmarvel managing director Paul Melinis underlined the importance of booking with experienced cruise brands capable of promptly adapting to extreme weather conditions. Passengers are urged to maintain close contact with operators for itinerary updates.
Cruise insurance specialist Jacqueline Mondelli of Squaremouth advised that cruise insurance plans offer superior protection for disruptions caused by
low water levels compared to standard travel insurance. These policies may cover prepaid activities missed and delays caused by river conditions.
AmaWaterways representative Jamie Loizou highlighted that while atypical, both low and high water levels are increasingly frequent, necessitating proactive planning and communications. He also stated that ship deployment is planned years in advance, allowing availability of spare ships, and that associated extra costs, such as hotel stays or coach transfers, are not passed to customers.
Rivers and Regions Unaffected by Low Water Levels
Several rivers such as the Seine, Douro, Mekong, and Nile have not experienced similar low water challenges in 2026, allowing cruise lines to maintain
normal operations in those regions.
The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) has reported growing interest in long-haul river cruising beyond Europe, with destinations in Asia and South America attracting increasing demand.
Founding World of Cruising’s Chris Pitchford remarked: “In some cases, guests have been told that their cruises will start at a nearby port where water levels are higher or that they will begin their trips with a hotel stay in Budapest before being transferred to their ship by coach.” He added cancellations have been minimised through itinerary and ship adjustments.
