Etihad Airways will launch a new seasonal route between Abu Dhabi and Gothenburg, Sweden, starting December 17, 2026. The service will operate four times per week and run through March 21, 2027, marking the first direct air connection between Gothenburg and Asia.

Aircraft and Onboard Features

The flights will be operated using the Airbus A321LR. This aircraft model offers three cabin classes, including First Suites, Business Class seats with fully flat beds, and Economy seating equipped with 4K entertainment screens. High-speed Wi-Fi service will be available across all cabins.

Route and Connectivity

The new service links Gothenburg, located on Sweden’s west coast, directly with Etihad’s hub at

Abu Dhabi airport. Through this hub, the route facilitates one-stop connections to key destinations in India and Asia including Bangkok, Singapore, Bali, Shanghai, Taipei, Bengaluru, and Colombo.

Official Statements and Regional Significance

Etihad Airways CEO Antonoaldo Neves stated that the A321LR aircraft enables this route by allowing the airline to offer its full three-cabin product scaled appropriately for Gothenburg, a center of industry and research with a nearby archipelago. Swedavia Airports CEO Mats Johannesson called the flight the first direct connection between Gothenburg and the United Arab Emirates, emphasizing strong demand from West Sweden’s business sector and its personal travel ties to Asia and the

Middle East.

Traveler Impact and Strategic Importance

The new route will provide passengers in West Sweden direct flights to Abu Dhabi with onward access to significant Asian destinations. It allows travelers to experience Abu Dhabi first-hand before continuing their journey. The connection supports business travel and personal visits, strengthening ties between West Sweden and markets in the Middle East, India, and Southeast Asia.

Network Expansion and Aircraft Role

This seasonal route makes Gothenburg Etihad Airways’ 15th new destination launched in 2026, reflecting the airline’s network growth strategy into Scandinavia. The Airbus A321LR’s long-range, medium-capacity capabilities with premium cabin options make such seasonal services feasible for markets like Gothenburg, which previously

lacked a direct air link to Asia.
