On Tuesday, September 15, 2026, pipes, cables, and other unauthorized materials were deliberately placed on dozens of railway tracks in the Netherlands, causing massive disruption to rail services. This deliberate placement triggered at least 35 signal failures across the network by misleading signals to register false train occupancy.
These unauthorized materials were identified in at least 20 separate locations on the Dutch railway system, leading to delays and cancellations predominantly affecting the central and northern regions of the country. A train near Steenwijk struck metal on the tracks on Monday, September 14, but no damage occurred as the train was
not operating at full speed.
The sabotage incidents coincided with ongoing protests by farmers opposed to the Dutch government’s planned nitrogen emission reduction policies. The Farmers Defence Force (FDF), although denying organized involvement in the sabotage, acknowledged individual farmers could be responsible. On the same day, FDF members staged roadside protests with burning hay bales and car tires, aligning with the government’s budget day, known as Prinsjesdag.
ProRail, the Dutch rail infrastructure operator, reported the use of metal pipes and cables fixed to tracks causing false signals and system failures. Mirjam van Velthuizen, ProRail’s interim CEO, emphasized the need for
improved contingency planning to enhance the railway’s resilience and accelerate recovery from disruptions. ProRail called the actions “extremely dangerous and unacceptable” but noted no accidents occurred as a result.
Dutch police are actively investigating the sabotage but have not yet identified suspects. ProRail sources referenced monitoring farmer groups on social media discussing direct action targeting railway infrastructure. This incident follows a history of farmer protests against nitrogen policies and increased scrutiny over agricultural contributions to nitrogen emissions, which the United States EPA estimates to be between 60 and 80 percent of human-driven nitrogen pollution.

northern parts of the Netherlands faced significant delays and service cancellations due to widespread signal failures caused by the sabotage. The automatic railway signaling system reacted to the unauthorized materials’ presence by changing signals to red, halting train movements and leading to standstills on multiple lines during the morning of September 15.

The Mineta Transportation Institute in California documents railway sabotage as a recurring tactic globally, with 282 train derailment attempts and 817 attacks on rail infrastructure recorded between 1970 and 2017. Western Europe is the second most targeted region, comprising 10.6 percent of derailment attempts worldwide. Groups motivated by
political, environmental, or social causes use railway sabotage primarily to disrupt service and attract public attention rather than cause casualties.
ProRail stated that sabotage of this nature poses serious safety risks to both passengers and railway personnel. Despite the disruption caused on September 15, no accidents were reported due to the failures triggered by the materials placed on the tracks.
