On October 14, 2026, Disney Cruise Line Japan officially announced the name of its inaugural Wish-class ship as Disney Imagination. Operated by Oriental Land Co., Ltd., which also runs Tokyo Disney Resort under Disney license, this is Disney’s first cruise ship for the Japanese market.
Ship specifications and design details
Disney Imagination will measure about 140,000 gross tons and accommodate approximately 4,000 guests in around 1,250 staterooms supported by a crew of about 1,500. The ship’s design is based on the Disney Wish, introduced in 2022, with modifications directed at the Japanese guest experience. Its stern showcases Ariel from The Little Mermaid alongside Sebastian and
others, incorporating a dinglehopper motif forming the vessel’s name.
Operational plans and itinerary
The ship will sail from Tokyo International Cruise Terminal offering primarily 2- to 4-night cruises beginning in spring 2029. Disney Imagination will operate under Japanese registry, becoming the first Disney vessel with a homeport in Japan.
Onboard offerings and guest experience
Entertainment onboard will include Broadway-style stage productions in a theater seating over 1,300 guests, outdoor deck shows featuring Disney characters, and various cruise programs. Dining options will span about 30 venues, including three main restaurants with distinct themes and menus, bars, cafes, and specialty shops. The ship will feature dedicated children’s activity zones and adult-only
serene spaces.
Investment and strategic significance
The total investment comprises ¥290 billion (approximately $1.87 billion) for the ship, plus ¥40 billion ($258 million) in contingency funds, based on an exchange rate of ¥155 per dollar. This initiative is part of Disney Cruise Line’s strategy to expand into new markets and leverage its longstanding partnership with Oriental Land Co.
At the announcement ceremony in Tokyo, Natacha Rafalski, President of Disney Signature Experiences, said, “We are honored to extend the magic of Disney cruising to fans in new markets and create opportunities for Japanese guests to experience a Disney vacation at sea.” Oriental Land Co. Chairperson
Yumiko Takano and other executives also participated.
Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany, and Walt Disney Imagineering collaborated on the ship’s design, ensuring Disney standards with adaptations for the Japanese market. The launch reflects a broader industry trend of tailoring vessels and itineraries for local markets.
