Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) recorded 74 cancelled departures and 76 cancelled arrivals on October 1, 2026, representing 6% cancellations in each direction amid severe thunderstorms. Inbound flights at DFW faced average delays exceeding one hour, with some delays surpassing two hours. Additionally, 13 departures and 114 arrivals were delayed, the latter accounting for 10% of inbound traffic that day.

FAA Implements Ground Delay Program at DFW

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Air Traffic Control System Command Center initiated a Ground Delay Program (GDP) at DFW early on October 1. The GDP is expected to continue until at least 10 a.m. local time, resulting in average departure

delays approaching 80 minutes for outbound flights during the program.

American Airlines Waives Change Fees for DFW Passengers

American Airlines issued a travel alert covering flights to, from, or through DFW on October 1. The airline is waiving change fees and fare differences for customers who rebook travel within the same cabin class during the designated period, easing disruptions caused by flight cancellations and delays.

Dallas Love Field Also Faces Delays and Southwest Advisory

Dallas Love Field (DAL) experienced severe weather impacts as well, with departure delays averaging approximately 54 minutes amid storm activity. Southwest Airlines responded with a travel advisory for October 1, permitting passengers to rebook or travel standby within 14 days in their original

class of service without incurring additional fees.

These flight disruptions at DFW and DAL on October 1 stem from thunderstorms affecting the Dallas region’s air traffic control capabilities. The FAA’s GDP and airline travel waivers have been implemented to mitigate widespread delays and cancellations at both airports.
