CRRC Zhuzhou Electric Locomotive has delivered the initial batch of seven three-car trainsets for Shanghai Metro Line 22, according to Railway Gazette International. A total of 40 trainsets have been ordered under a contract that includes long-term maintenance, marking the metro operator’s first rolling stock purchase with such an agreement.
Each trainset features silicon carbide auxiliary converters and oil-free air compressors, technologies intended to enhance energy efficiency and lower maintenance demands. The trains are designed to reach a maximum speed of 120 km/h and will operate under GoA4 unattended automation. They also support automatic coupling and uncoupling during service, allowing
operators to adjust train length to meet passenger flow.
The design of the train exteriors and interiors draws from Chongming Island’s natural environment and Chinese cultural motifs, incorporating elements symbolizing terraced fields and reed beds.
Line 22, formerly known as the Chongming Line, spans 43 km with 41 km of underground track. It will include eight stations connecting Jinji Road station in Pudong to Yu’an on Chongming Island via Changxing Island. This line will be Shanghai’s first to cross the Yangtze River and feature the longest river crossing on a Chinese metro system.
The new metro line and its trainsets
are scheduled to enter service by the end of 2026. The automated trains and infrastructure will improve cross-river rail connectivity between Pudong and Chongming Island.
