CrossCountry is set to add eight additional Voyager trains to its fleet from early 2027, with remaining units delivered through May 2028. These high-speed trains, featuring four or five cars designed for long-distance travel, will increase capacity by creating 60,000 more seats weekly across the network.

The new Voyagers will operate on CrossCountry’s Edinburgh to Plymouth route, which passes through Exeter. This route is a key artery for CrossCountry’s long-distance services across the United Kingdom.

Shiona Rolfe, CrossCountry’s managing director, said the additional Voyager trains represent an important step toward delivering a reliable railway and building a stronger CrossCountry. She

added that, together with the fleet refurbishment program, this investment demonstrates the company’s commitment to the reliable railway customers deserve. A company spokesperson confirmed that once introduced, the trains will provide more seats on more services through Exeter.

Rail Minister Lord Hendy stated these extra trains will mean more seats, less crowding, and greater resilience for services between major towns. He also said that as passenger services move into public ownership under Great British Railways, track and train will be integrated to deliver joined-up, reliable services that support growth, jobs, and homes nationwide.

Earlier, CrossCountry introduced 12 new trains between

2024 and 2025 as part of its ongoing fleet upgrade. Passengers travelling to and from Exeter can expect improved reliability and reduced crowding on their services once the new Voyagers enter service.
