Unlike the previous increase in 2017 that raised the tax from 4% to 5% without voter approval, state law now requires this proposed hike to be approved by voters. The additional tax revenue is intended to finance the completion of a sports complex in Collier County. If approved by voters, visitors to the county would face a higher tourist tax, contributing more to local tourism funding.
