Chicago’s airports experienced significant operational disruptions on July 4, 2026, with a total of 1,201 flight delays recorded throughout the day. Alongside these delays, 138 flights were cancelled, severely affecting air travel activity in the city.

Major carriers such as American Airlines, SkyWest, and United Airlines were involved in the widespread disruptions. These interruptions impacted flights on various routes, including those connecting Chicago to destinations within the United States and internationally to Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan.

As a result of these delays and cancellations, thousands of passengers faced disruptions to their travel plans, encountering extended waiting periods

and cancellations across multiple domestic and international itineraries. The operational challenges affected airport capacity and passenger flow amid what is typically a busy travel period.
