A 56-year-old male passenger jumped overboard from the Carnival Cruise Line ship Carnival Panorama late Friday night, September 18, 2026, while the ship was sailing from Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, to Long Beach, California.
The incident occurred during the final day of the vessel’s seven-night cruise that called at several coastal destinations in Mexico. Carnival Panorama, which measures 1,059 feet in length, was en route to Long Beach when the passenger was reported missing.
Initial Ship Response and Lockdown
Upon notification of the missing guest, the Carnival Panorama crew implemented search procedures, including reviewing CCTV footage that confirmed the man jumped overboard. Passengers were instructed to
return to their cabins, and a below-deck lockdown was enforced during the operation. The ship turned back to assist with the search around 2 p.m. and resumed its original route by approximately 4:30 p.m.
Carnival Cruise Line confirmed the passenger went overboard and notified both U.S. and Mexican Coast Guards. “When notified of a missing guest, the ship’s team initiated search and investigation procedures, including reviewing CCTV footage and notifying both the U.S. and Mexico Coast Guards,” said a Carnival spokesperson.
Search and Rescue Efforts
The U.S. Coast Guard stated that Rescue Coordination Center Alameda was notified on Saturday afternoon to coordinate the search
and rescue efforts. Fixed wing aircraft, Mexican Navy vessels, and commercial ships are assisting in the ongoing operation off the coast of Mexico near the Baja Peninsula.
“Rescue Coordination Center Alameda is coordinating search and rescue efforts. The Coast Guard launched fixed wing aircraft to assist with the search and is coordinating search efforts with the Mexican Navy and commercial vessels in the area. The search remains ongoing,” said a U.S. Coast Guard spokesperson.
Carnival’s Statement and Family Support
Carnival Cruise Line said the cause of the passenger jumping overboard is under investigation. “Carnival’s Care Team is supporting the guest’s family, and our thoughts and
prayers are with them and their loved ones,” Carnival spokesperson Julie Leonardi stated. The family was traveling with the passenger.
The ship is cooperating fully with authorities as the search continues. The passenger’s identity has not been released beyond his age and gender.
Passenger Experience and Context
Passengers aboard Carnival Panorama described hearing repeated instructions to return to their rooms during the search operation. One passenger, Michael Bedwell, said, “They were walking around saying ‘OK everyone back to your rooms.’ We didn’t really know what was going on. They just kept saying they are looking for a person and now we know he jumped
overboard I guess.”
