Logan International Airport experienced significant flight disruptions on Monday, with 520 flights delayed or cancelled as of Monday night. The Federal Aviation Administration imposed a ground delay beginning at 7:30 a.m. and continuing through 2:59 a.m. the following day, causing inbound flights to face average delays exceeding five hours.
The delays and cancellations were attributed to a combination of lingering weather from a nor’easter that affected southern New England and ongoing runway and taxiway construction at Logan. The storm had deposited between three and more than seven inches of rain on the region over the weekend, contributing to continued adverse
conditions.
Operational Challenges Due to Runway Closure
The Federal Aviation Administration cited construction activities as the primary reason for the ground delay. Normally, aircraft would use a specific runway currently closed for construction; however, high winds on Monday rendered this runway unusable. Massport officials indicated that air traffic controllers had to rely on alternative runways, which reduced the airport’s ability to efficiently manage airplane movements.
Massport spokesperson Jennifer Mehigan explained that the combination of high winds and the closed runway forced controllers to operate with constrained resources, contributing to the extensive delays and cancellations experienced.
Weather Conditions and Forecast
The nor’easter’s remnants continued to affect operations at Logan International. Light
showers persisted throughout Monday evening with forecasts indicating up to one additional inch of rainfall possible. Winds were expected to diminish as the storm moved northward and weakened, potentially easing conditions in the coming hours.
