Approximately 140 flights arriving and departing Brussels Airport were cancelled on Friday, 9 October 2026, as part of a national strike involving ground handler Alyzia staff. The strike participation by Alyzia employees caused significant operational disruptions at Belgium’s main airport.
Affected Airlines and Routes
The strike impacted flights operated by Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways, Air Arabia, and United Airlines. Brussels Airlines cancelled specific flights including departures to London Heathrow at 4:55 pm and to Manchester at 10:00 am and 9:30 pm, as well as arrivals from Manchester at 8:30 am and 1:30 pm, and from Heathrow at 8:00 pm. Additionally, flights to and from
Paris, Budapest, Madrid, and Chicago were affected.
Unaffected Airlines and Operational Details
British Airways flights to and from Brussels Airport, including those to Edinburgh, remained unaffected. Low-cost carriers Ryanair, easyJet, and Wizz Air also operated normally as they use a different ground handling company. Alyzia handles roughly half of the flights it services on strike day, affecting around 20 airlines through roles such as baggage handling, ramp operations, aircraft de-icing, cleaning, and cargo transport.
Brussels Airlines confirmed its own staff were not involved in the strike and noted this was the third major operational disruption caused by external industrial actions this year.
Official Statements and Passenger Rights
Brussels Airport expressed
regret for the cancellations attributed to part of Alyzia’s workforce participating in the national demonstration. Brussels Airlines stated, “We regret that this is already the third time this year that our flight schedule has been seriously disrupted by industrial action taken by external parties.” The airline cited significant financial impact and disruption imposed by the strike.
According to regulation, flight cancellations due to strikes are classified as “extraordinary circumstances,” meaning passengers are not entitled to compensation. Affected passengers are eligible for flight rebooking or refunds without charge. Airlines must also provide food, drinks, and accommodation when necessary. Alyzia-contracted airlines are
contacting passengers directly with updates and options.
Upcoming Strike Impact on Public Transport
Further nationwide strike action is scheduled for Monday, 12 October 2026, targeting public services across Belgium. This will not disrupt air traffic but is expected to cause public transport delays, potentially affecting ground access to Brussels Airport.
