Armenia received 1.042 million tourist visits during the first six months of 2026, marking the highest number ever recorded for that period, according to Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan. The government aims to reach 2.2 million tourist arrivals by the end of the year. Preliminary figures indicate a 14.8% increase in foreign visitors in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025.
June 2026 Visitor Composition Reflects Regional Dominance and New Market Growth
Visitors from Russia, Georgia, and Iran constituted the largest groups in June 2026, accounting for approximately 40%, 15%, and 8% of total arrivals, respectively. Sona Hovhannisyan, head of the International Cooperation Department at the Tourism
Committee, attributed this concentration to geographical proximity, historical links, shorter travel durations, and strong Armenian diaspora communities in these countries. Significant increases were also recorded from China, following the launch of the Urumqi–Yerevan air route and the recent implementation of visa-free travel for Chinese tourists. Enhanced flight frequencies have increased arrivals from Italy, while new direct air services supported visitor growth from Germany and Kazakhstan. Additional interest has emerged from Spain, the Czech Republic, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom, supported by the commencement of direct London–Yerevan flights. Conversely, arrivals from India, the Philippines, and Egypt declined.
Inbound Tourism Data and Season Expansion Clarified by Officials
The Tourism Committee
clarifies that the published statistics reflect only inbound tourism, excluding domestic tourism by Armenian residents. Data on inbound visitors, who must stay at least one night and not engage in paid work, are compiled exclusively from border checkpoint records. In contrast, domestic tourism data are collected quarterly by the Statistical Committee under Armenia’s Law on Tourism. Hovhannisyan noted that Armenia’s tourism season is progressively extending beyond the traditional summer months, with growing winter tourism activity. She stated, “If the record figures registered this January become a lasting trend, we will be able to say that Armenia offers active tourism almost
all year round.” Visitor peaks remain in summer, September, and October, but increasing activity during winter is encouraging.
Intensified International Marketing and Promotions in 2026
The Tourism Committee is expanding its global marketing and promotion campaigns. Dianna Karapetyan, head of the Marketing and Promotion Department, reported Armenia’s participation in united national pavilions at major 2026 tourism exhibitions in Spain, Germany, Romania, and Russia. The committee also collaborates with international media, PR agencies, bloggers, and influencers through familiarisation visits and targeted campaigns, resulting in increased media coverage. Upcoming events will provide Armenian tourism companies further opportunities to present the country’s culture, cuisine, tourist attractions, and experiences using presentations,
promotional videos, brochures, and hospitality activities. Strengthening international cooperation is supported by meetings between the Chair of the Tourism Committee and counterparts in other countries.

Officials underscore Armenia’s growing international profile as a secure travel destination. Economy Minister Gevorg Papoyan confirmed the record visitor numbers in the first half of 2026 and the expectation of a new annual record. Hovhannisyan elucidated the distinctions between inbound and domestic tourism data and emphasized the role of air connectivity in driving growth. Karapetyan stated, “Armenia has established itself in the global tourism market as a safe and secure destination.” The Tourism Committee is
also preparing a significant new initiative to support further development, though details remain undisclosed.
