American Airlines experienced a nationwide ground stop on the evening of July 28, 2026, imposed by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) due to an IT connectivity issue. The ground stop affected all flights not already airborne, halting departures across the United States and lasted less than one hour.

Flight Delays and System Restoration

More than 1,100 American Airlines flights were delayed during the outage, as systems critical to operations temporarily lost connectivity. Airline teams worked swiftly to bring the systems back online, allowing flight departures to resume once the ground stop was lifted the same day.

Concurrent Severe Weather Impacts in the Northeast

The IT outage coincided with severe thunderstorms in the

Northeastern US, which caused widespread disruption including over 2,500 cancellations across multiple airports. Major hubs affected included New York City area airports and Newark Liberty International Airport. The storm was forecast to continue into the night, intensifying the disruption.

American Airlines issued an apology for the inconvenience caused by the temporary operational halt. The airline stated, “Connectivity has been fully restored. We apologize to our customers for the inconvenience. We appreciate the efforts of our team to bring our systems back online so quickly and take care of our customers.” The FAA confirmed flights not already in the air were

held as a precaution during the outage.

This incident marked the third FAA-imposed ground stop for American Airlines in two years stemming from IT-related issues, underscoring challenges the carrier faces with system reliability amid operational pressures.
