After a delay of nearly one year, Alberta has formally introduced a comprehensive passenger rail master plan outlining development for the next three decades. The strategy, made public in early June 2026, sets out a vision for expanding passenger rail services throughout the province.

Among the projects detailed in the plan, a rail connection between downtown Alberta and the airport is identified as the first significant initiative to be undertaken. This downtown-to-airport train is highlighted as a key priority to enhance transportation access within the region.
