Alaska Airlines is expanding its spring and summer 2026 seasonal service from Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport (ANC) with three new nonstop routes to Boise, Boston, and Spokane. The airline also added a Wednesday flight on the Anchorage to San Diego and Anchorage to Sacramento routes for summer 2026, increasing frequency beyond the previously scheduled Saturdays-only service.
Anchorage Airport Leads in Cargo and Passenger Growth
ANC ranks first in the United States for cargo volume and third worldwide, according to Airports Council International World, underscoring its role as a global transit hub on the Pacific Great Circle route. The airport handles about 5 million passengers annually and reported
an over 11 percent year-over-year increase in seat capacity during the first half of 2026, leading all medium and large U.S. hub airports. Teri Lindseth, Alaska International Airport System Development Manager, confirmed ANC’s passenger growth reflects strong demand for travel between Alaska and the Lower 48 states.
Southwest and American Airlines Introduce Seasonal Anchorage Service
Southwest Airlines launched seasonal service to ANC in May 2026, joining the airport’s expanding roster of carriers. American Airlines began a seasonal route connecting Anchorage to Phoenix in May 2026, operating through September 8. Andrew Watterson, Southwest COO, expressed honor in serving Anchorage and thanked state officials for their support. Angie Spear, director
of the Alaska International Airport System, said welcoming Southwest strengthens competition and Anchorage’s position as a gateway for passengers and cargo.
ANC Infrastructure Modernization Supports Growth
To manage growing passenger and cargo volumes, ANC approved a 20-year master plan outlining terminal expansions, increased gate capacity, modernization of operational systems, and enhanced parking solutions. Though plans for a new, taller air traffic control tower are on hold pending FAA rebidding, incremental improvements continue. The airport has also upgraded passenger services, including TSA checkpoint expansion and enhanced concessions programs that rank first in two categories of the 2025 Airport Experience Fact Book for U.S. airports.
