Fifty new flight routes across European airports will commence in October 2026, marking extensive network expansions for the northern winter 2026-27 season. Airlines will launch multiple new destinations and increase frequencies starting from early to late October.

Finnair Expands to Australia via Bangkok

Finnair will introduce daily flights between Helsinki Airport and Melbourne Airport with a stop at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport beginning October 25, 2026. The airline will operate these flights using Airbus A350 aircraft, offering fifth-freedom rights on the Bangkok-Melbourne sector. Return flights from Melbourne will launch on October 26. This route provides passengers connections to roughly 90 European destinations via Helsinki.

Western Sydney International Airport Opens with Jetstar and Air New Zealand

Jetstar will operate

the first departing passenger service from Western Sydney International Airport on October 25, 2026, with an inaugural flight to Gold Coast Airport. Jetstar’s initial schedule from Western Sydney includes up to 14 weekly flights to Melbourne, 4 weekly to Gold Coast, and 3 weekly to Brisbane, all serviced by A320 aircraft. The airport, serving Sydney’s western suburbs, operates without a nighttime curfew. The following day, Air New Zealand will become the airport’s first international carrier, launching 3 weekly Auckland flights using A320 and A321 aircraft, while maintaining services from Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

Etihad Airways Adds Routes to Saudi Arabia, Luxembourg and Canada

Etihad Airways will begin weekly flights from

Abu Dhabi Zayed International Airport to Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea International Airport on October 4, 2026, using A320 aircraft. Frequencies will increase to twice weekly from October 25. The airline will also start 4 weekly services to Luxembourg Airport during October, deploying A321neo-family aircraft and becoming the first Middle Eastern carrier to serve Luxembourg. On October 25, Etihad will launch a 4 weekly Boeing 787-9 route from Abu Dhabi to Calgary International Airport, establishing the first nonstop connection between the Middle East and Western Canada.

European and North American Carriers Boost Long-Haul Networks

Lufthansa will resume five weekly flights from Frankfurt Airport to Kuala Lumpur International Airport starting

October 25, 2026, using Boeing 787-9 aircraft. Swiss International Air Lines will commence five weekly Zurich to Bengaluru flights at the start of the winter season. British Airways will return to Sri Lanka after 11 years with three weekly London Gatwick to Colombo Bandaranaike International Airport flights starting October 23, 2026, operated by Boeing 777 aircraft. United Airlines will restore daily service between Chicago O’Hare International Airport and Tokyo Narita Airport beginning October 24 with 787-8 aircraft. Air Canada will inaugurate two new A321XLR routes to Tenerife South Airport: two weekly flights from Toronto Pearson starting October 25, and one

weekly from Montreal beginning October 31. These become the only nonstop North America-Canary Islands connections.

Delta Air Lines Plans Daily Atlanta to Riyadh Service

Delta Air Lines intends to launch daily flights from Atlanta to Riyadh starting October 23, 2026, utilizing A350-900 aircraft, subject to review amid regional uncertainty. This would mark Delta’s first route to Saudi Arabia and the first nonstop U.S. carrier service to Riyadh.

These network expansions coincide with the December 2025 increase in passenger entitlements under the Canada-UAE air services agreement, raising frequencies to 35 weekly flights per country. This change enables Etihad’s enhanced services to Calgary and Luxembourg.

Travelers will benefit from expanded direct

air access across Europe starting October 2026. Finnair’s route offers seamless connections to nearly 90 European cities, while the Western Sydney International Airport opening provides an alternative Sydney gateway without night curfews. Etihad’s Calgary route is the first nonstop link connecting Western Canada with the Middle East. Air Canada’s new routes deliver the exclusive nonstop North America to Canary Islands service. British Airways will restore a direct link to Sri Lanka without Middle Eastern hub transfers. United Airlines’ daily Chicago to Tokyo Narita flights will increase competitive options.
