Aeromexico intends to launch a direct flight route between Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) in March 2027, pending government approval. The airline will deploy Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft to service this long-haul connection.
Passenger data from Sabre Market Intelligence shows approximately 136,100 two-way travelers moved between Mexico and Milan in 2025, an increase of 2.7% over the previous year. Milan ranks as Mexico’s ninth-largest European city market and second largest within Italy, trailing only Rome, which generated roughly 237,200 passengers in the same period. Aeromexico holds 80.5% of the Mexico-Italy market capacity via its Mexico
City-Rome route according to OAG data.
The expansion benefits from Mexico City International Airport’s plan to allocate about 10 additional slot pairs during the winter 2026-27 season. Currently, Neos Air operates nonstop flights connecting Milan to Cancun but no direct Milan-Mexico City service exists. Aeromexico maintains a reciprocal codeshare agreement with ITA Airways on the Mexico City-Rome route, offering onward Italian connections.

Giancarlo Mulinelli, Aeromexico’s Senior Vice President of Global Sales, highlighted that Milan’s addition to the network will enhance cultural, commercial, and business links between Mexico and Italy. He stated, “We are very excited to add the city of
Milan to our international network, a destination that will allow us to strengthen the cultural, commercial and business ties between Mexico and Italy.” Mulinelli added that this move positions Aeromexico as the only Mexican airline to offer direct connections between Mexico City and two major Italian cities, addressing rising demand from passengers traveling for both business and leisure.

Mexico City is actively developing its profile as a major international cultural hub. The city features historical landmarks such as the Centro Historico with the Zocalo square, the Metropolitan Cathedral, and Templo Mayor ruins of the Aztec capital. Cultural venues include the
Palace of Fine Arts, National Museum of Art, and the Torre Latinoamericana, which offers extensive city views.
The extensive Chapultepec Park houses key institutions like the National Museum of Anthropology and Chapultepec Castle, the National Museum of History, and several art museums. Neighborhoods such as Coyoacan, home to the Frida Kahlo Museum and pre-Hispanic art sites, and Xochimilco with its ancient canal system further enrich the city’s cultural offerings.

The Milan-Mexico City route supports strengthened tourism and business relations between Italy and Mexico. Italy ranks as the 13th largest source market for visitors to Mexico, with 118,242 air arrivals recorded
in 2025, reflecting a 13.7% increase year over year. This new direct air service complements existing Neos Air routes connecting Milan and Rome to Cancun and Aeromexico’s Mexico City-Rome flights.
The additional Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft and increased slot availability at Mexico City International Airport facilitate this route launch. The scheduled March 2027 service will provide travelers in northern Italy with direct nonstop access to Mexico City, eliminating the need for transfers through Rome or Cancun.
