Aeromexico is set to introduce a new direct flight route linking Milan Malpensa Airport in Italy and Mexico City International Airport in March 2027, using Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft. The new service requires government approval before launch.
Passenger Traffic Between Milan and Mexico Reflects Growing Demand
About 136,100 passengers traveled round-trip between Milan and Mexico in 2025, representing a 2.7% increase from 2024. Milan is Mexico’s ninth-largest European city market and the second-largest Italian market after Rome, which had approximately 237,200 passengers. Aeromexico remains the largest operator on Mexico-Italy routes, accounting for 80.5% of capacity on the Mexico City-Rome service, according to OAG data.
Additional Airport Capacity Supports Route Expansion
Aeromexico’s recent delivery of its
25th Boeing 787 Dreamliner supports this route expansion. The airline anticipates acquiring about 10 additional slot pairs at Mexico City International Airport for the winter 2026-27 season, as the airport increases its operating capacity, enabling Aeromexico to launch new long-haul flights.
Competitive Landscape and Partnership Details
The new Milan Malpensa to Mexico City link will be the first nonstop service on this route. Milan currently connects only to Cancun in Mexico, operated by Neos Air on long-haul flights to Milan and Rome. Aeromexico also maintains a codeshare agreement with ITA Airways on the Mexico City-Rome route, facilitating onward connections within Italy.

Cultural and Tourism Importance Underpinning Route Addition
The Milan to Mexico City route aims to enhance travel opportunities for passengers in northern Italy, who will no
longer need to connect through Rome or Cancun. Italy ranked as the 13th largest source market for visitors to Mexico in 2025, with air arrivals from Italian residents increasing 13.7% to 118,242. Mexico City is promoting itself as a major cultural destination featuring historic districts, museums, and significant events in early 2027.
