Aeromexico has announced plans to operate a direct route between Milan Malpensa Airport (MXP) and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) starting in March 2027, subject to regulatory approval. The airline will deploy Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft for this long-haul service.
Aeromexico’s Italy Network Expansion
This new Milan connection will become Aeromexico’s second destination in Italy, following its existing Mexico City-Rome Fiumicino service. Aeromexico currently accounts for 80.5% of passenger capacity on the Mexico City-Rome route. It also maintains a reciprocal codeshare agreement with ITA Airways covering the Mexico City-Rome service with further connections across Italy.
Passenger Demand and Market Context
In 2025, approximately 136,100 two-way passengers traveled between Milan
and Mexico, reflecting a 2.7% increase from 2024. Milan ranks as Mexico’s ninth-largest European city market and the second largest in Italy behind Rome, which registered around 237,200 passengers. Presently, there is no nonstop service between Mexico City and Milan. The only Mexican connection to Milan operates via Neos Air flights from Cancun.
Operational Capacity and Slot Availability
Mexico City International Airport is expected to provide around 10 additional slot pairs in the winter 2026-27 season. This capacity increase will support Aeromexico’s planned route expansion. The airline’s recent receipt of its 25th Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft facilitates this service launch.

President of Global Sales, stated, “We are very excited to add the city of Milan to our international network, a destination that will allow us to strengthen the cultural, commercial and business ties between Mexico and Italy.” He added, “With this, we will become the only airline in our country to directly connect Mexico City with two of the most iconic Italian destinations, offering greater opportunities to serve a growing demand from passengers travelling both for business and pleasure.”
Traveler Benefits and Cultural Context
The new nonstop Milan-Mexico City route will provide northern Italy with a direct connection to Mexico’s capital, removing the need to
connect via Rome or Cancun. The route launch coincides with Mexico City’s efforts to position itself as a major cultural destination. In early 2027, the city will host several events including the EDC Mexico festival (February 19-21), the International Book Fair (February 26 to March 7), concerts such as Jungle on March 19, the MET Opera “Silent Night” on March 20, and the Lavoe Sinfonico salsa concert on March 24.
