Japan’s tourism sector witnessed a notable reduction in foreign visitor arrivals during April 2026, with an overall decrease exceeding 5% compared to previous periods. This decline marked a substantial shift in inbound tourism numbers for the month.

Visitors from mainland China played a significant role in this downturn, as their arrivals plunged by more than 56% in the same month. The sharp fall in tourists from this key market contributed heavily to the overall drop in overseas visitor figures. Broader travel uncertainties across global markets were also factors affecting tourism inflows during this period.
