MSC Poesia was detained by the U.S. Coast Guard at the Port of Miami on November 3, 2026, with more than 2,000 passengers on board at the time of the action.
U.S. Coast Guard Inspection and Detainment
The Coast Guard Miami sector conducted an expanded inspection of MSC Poesia, identifying deficiencies in onboard systems. Capt. Frank Florio, commander of the Coast Guard Miami sector, stated these issues were being addressed with MSC Cruises. Authorities detained the vessel on Sunday prior to the scheduled sailing as part of their efforts to verify compliance with U.S. and international maritime safety regulations.
Cruise Cancellation and Cooperation
MSC Cruises canceled the ship’s planned 11-night
departure on November 3, 2026, citing a “regulatory matter” that could not be resolved in time to allow sailing. The cruise line confirmed it is fully cooperating with the U.S. Coast Guard throughout the inspection process. The vessel, which can carry over 3,200 passengers and more than 1,000 crew members, will remain detained until all deficiencies are corrected and the Coast Guard clears it for departure.
Passenger Impact and Official Statements
Passengers booked on the November 3 cruise received full refunds and assistance from MSC Cruises to return home. The cancellation affected more than 2,000 guests on board at the time of detainment. MSC Cruises
issued an apology to customers for the disruption. Capt. Florio emphasized the Coast Guard’s priority to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel, and the environment, explaining that the detention will stay in effect until all issues are resolved.
“We recognize how disappointing and frustrating this news is for our guests, and we sincerely apologize for the disruption to their holiday,” MSC Cruises said in a statement. The Coast Guard added that “it is the Captain of the Port’s priority to ensure the safety of passengers, crew, the vessel, and the environment.”
