The luxury cruise ship Villa Vie Odyssey suspended operations in the Cambodian port city of Sihanoukville on Tuesday, 28 October 2026, stranding roughly 200 passengers due to unprecedented fuel cost increases. Passengers were notified at 6am and required to disembark by 2pm the same day, according to the ship operator Villa Vie Residences.
Ship Specifications and Voyage Details
The Villa Vie Odyssey measures nearly 200 meters (656 feet) in length and can accommodate up to 650 passengers. The United States-based cruise liner departed Belfast, United Kingdom, in October 2024 for a continuous 3.5-year voyage planned to visit nearly 150 countries worldwide.
Fuel Price Surge and Operational Adjustments
Fuel costs per cabin
increased from approximately $1,800 to $8,000 per month in parts of Asia. Villa Vie Residences implemented measures to reduce consumption, such as slowing the itinerary and extending port stays, but they proved insufficient to counter the surge. The company stated that passing the full fuel cost increase on to residents was not a feasible solution.
Passenger Disembarkation and Immediate Impact
About 200 passengers were onboard when ordered to disembark in Sihanoukville, a city noted for its recent growth related to Chinese casinos and scam centers. Passengers were informed early Tuesday morning and faced an eight-hour window to leave the ship. Many passengers have been relocated
to various hotels in Sihanoukville amid logistical challenges associated with the city’s distance from major international airports.
Passenger Reactions and Community Response
Passengers Lanette Canen and Johan Bodin described receiving the disembarkation notice as a shock despite prior awareness of financial difficulties. They recounted, “Even then, we were still hoping a miracle investor would come through. Although there were signs, we felt disbelief when it became real. It felt like our dream had been crushed.” They added there had been “a lot of hugs and tears as residents support one another.” Another passenger, Holly Hennessey, noted that the itinerary had been “severely curtailed” prior to
the halt and passengers were asked to consider a fuel surcharge. Some opted to disembark earlier and travel overland.
Company Statement and Restructuring Efforts
Villa Vie Residences announced a 60-day restructuring and recapitalisation phase to address unsustainable costs. They emphasized no guaranteed outcome from this process. The operator affirmed efforts to coordinate disembarkation and temporary accommodations for affected residents as they seek financial solutions.
Context of Fuel Price Increase and Prior Challenges
The dramatic rise in fuel costs has been linked to the Iran conflict that began in early 2026. Villa Vie Residences had already faced delays and costly repairs that postponed departure from Belfast, incurring multimillion-pound losses. Despite a potential investor completing
due diligence onboard, no investment was secured to maintain operations.
Passenger Accommodation and Travel Difficulties
Following disembarkation, passengers were distributed across multiple hotels in Sihanoukville, complicating reunification and travel plans. The remote location relative to major international airports made onward travel challenging. Some passengers had already chosen to disembark earlier in different parts of Southeast Asia.
Luxury Residence Model and Pricing Details
Villa Vie Odyssey offered a lifetime residence program targeting retirees, with cabin ownership priced between $120,000 and $440,000. Monthly rental options were available at approximately $3,500. Onboard amenities included multiple bars and restaurants, a pool deck, and a pickleball court. The voyage featured a “Skip Forward” package introduced in
2024, coinciding with US political developments, aimed at residents seeking extended sea-based living.
Passenger Future Plans Amid Uncertainty
Passengers Canen and Bodin expressed gratitude for their two years aboard despite the shortened journey, noting the friendships formed and plans to remain in Southeast Asia temporarily. They said, “Many of the passengers have already made plans to settle together off the ship, so those friendships and that sense of community are continuing on land.” Passenger Hennessey indicated reluctance to abandon the cruise lifestyle, stating, “Until they say we are done – done done – I am not giving up.” No timeline has been announced for resumption
of operations.
