Storm Boelo brought heavy rain and winds reaching 80 mph to Scotland starting Saturday evening, prompting ScotRail and Network Rail to implement precautionary safety measures including widespread speed restrictions and rail line closures. Passengers were warned of expected delays, cancellations, and advised to allow extra journey time while checking route statuses before travel.
Key Route Closures and Timings
Major closures began Saturday night with the Glasgow Central to Ayr service suspended from 9 pm between Kilwinning and Ayr. At 10 pm, lines from Glasgow Queen Street to Oban and Mallaig shut, specifically impacting the Fort William to Mallaig and Crianlarich to Oban segments. On Sunday
morning, the Inverness to Kyle of Lochalsh route closed between Kyle of Lochalsh and Achnashellach at start of service. The Inverness to Wick and Thurso line was simultaneously closed between Helmsdale and the northern termini.
Safety Inspections and Speed Restrictions
Network Rail engineers conducted mandatory daylight inspections of all closed routes before reopening, assessing flood damage, fallen debris, structural risks, and other hazards caused by the storm. Alongside closures, blanket speed restrictions came into effect late Saturday night across much of the Scottish rail network, continuing through Sunday. The Far North Line’s speed limits may extend until Monday morning, reflecting ongoing weather and safety concerns.
Ticket Flexibility and Passenger Guidance
ScotRail introduced temporary ticket flexibility allowing passengers with valid Saturday or Sunday tickets to travel on any service before the storm’s impact Saturday and to use tickets after routes reopen following inspections. Customers were urged to verify train statuses immediately before departure and to factor additional travel time. ScotRail released an updated app version delivering real-time journey information to assist travelers during disruptions.
Official Statements on Safety and Travel Advice
Mark Ilderton, ScotRail Service Delivery Director, emphasized that safety is the highest priority amid strong winds and heavy rain related to Storm Boelo. He acknowledged the expected travel frustration but justified the delays and closures as necessary
safety precautions. Ilderton advised passengers to download the latest ScotRail app version and verify journey status before traveling.
