Intercontinental Hotels Group (IHG) announced on October 22, 2026, it now operates 1,000 hotels across Europe. This figure reflects a significant expansion within the region for the global hospitality company.
Over the past three years, IHG added more than 210 hotels to its European portfolio, resulting in a net system size growth exceeding 25%. In parallel, the company has a development pipeline of more than 280 European hotels currently underway.
The development projects cover a range of categories, including luxury, premium business, lifestyle properties, and more affordable branded accommodations. This broad mix supports IHG’s continued investment across key cities and
emerging travel destinations.
Brand Portfolio Expansion and Market Entries
Since early 2024, IHG recorded 36 brand debuts across European countries, excluding Ruby brand properties. The rollouts included new market entries in Iceland, Sweden, and Greece. The group also bolstered its portfolio by acquiring Ruby, a premium urban lifestyle hotel operator, and inaugurating Noted Collection, its 21st hotel brand, which has secured seven signings globally.
Noted Collection targets luxury and lifestyle independent-style hotels, complementing other brands in IHG’s expanding roster.
Notable Properties in Europe
Key hotel additions highlight the variety within IHG’s portfolio. In London, The Hari hotel, with 85 rooms and situated in Belgravia near Knightsbridge and Hyde Park, joined
IHG’s Vignette Collection. This luxury and lifestyle brand now operates 13 hotels in Europe and has 16 properties under development.
In France, Ruby Lilou Hotel Marseille marked the Ruby brand’s debut, located near the historic waterfront and central districts of Marseille. Meanwhile, Crowne Plaza Vienna, a 195-room property in Austria’s capital, expanded IHG’s premium hotel offerings.
Expansion Strategies in the European Market
IHG’s growth in Europe relies on a combination of newly developed hotels, conversions of existing properties, and introducing established brands into new markets. Hotel conversions allow the group to enter central urban locations where new construction is challenging.
This approach contributed to record hotel
openings and development agreements in 2025, supporting the company’s strengthened presence across major cities including London, Marseille, Vienna, and Madrid.
Traveler Benefits and Market Context
The expansion increases destination options and accommodation types available through IHG’s loyalty program, IHG One Rewards, which has over 160 million members worldwide. This programme connects travelers to a growing array of hotel brands in Europe and beyond.
Europe remains the world’s leading international tourism destination, with UN Tourism data recording approximately 793 million international arrivals in 2025. Strong demand from leisure travelers, city breaks, and business travel continues to drive investment in European hotel accommodations.
