A power surge at London Stansted Airport on Sunday, October 25, 2026, disrupted key operational systems, including security screening and baggage handling, resulting in delays to approximately 250 flights and cancellation of six, according to flight-tracking data referenced by Sky News and Flightradar24.

By Sunday evening, all affected systems were restored, and airport operational teams were assisting passengers impacted by the disruption at Stansted Airport, which also affected the surrounding area’s electrical supply.

Passengers faced long queues at security checkpoints and uncertainty about timely gate access due to the interruption. Airlines and the airport advised checking official departure boards and

airline communications for up-to-date flight status during the recovery period.

Rail Disruptions Linked to Separate Storm Damage

Separate from the power surge, railway services to Stansted Airport were disrupted due to fallen trees near Stansted Mountfitchet damaging overhead electrical infrastructure on October 23 and 24, 2026. The Stansted Express was forced to divert trains away from Tottenham Hale station before 7 a.m. on October 25, complicating passenger journeys to the airport.

The rail disruption and airport power surge were distinct events. Rail passengers were advised to consult Stansted Express service updates due to ongoing engineering work and storm-related impacts on the Essex train routes.

Official Statements on System Restoration and Passenger Rights

London Stansted Airport

confirmed all affected operational systems had been restored by Sunday evening on October 25, 2026. The UK Civil Aviation Authority clarified that while airlines must provide care and assistance during qualifying cancellations, they are generally not responsible for offering replacement flights to passengers who miss boarding due to extensive security delays caused by the power surge.

Passengers with canceled flights may be entitled to reimbursement or alternative travel arrangements under UK passenger rights legislation and are encouraged to retain booking information and receipts when seeking compensation or assistance from their airlines.
