A partial derailment of a freight train occurred near Barking station in East London at approximately 13:10 on October 23, 2026. The incident blocked two platforms between Woodgrange Park and Barking, causing significant disruption to local rail services.

Disruptions Across Multiple Lines and Stations

The derailment led to cancellations and route alterations affecting several rail services. Trains that normally run through Barking were either cancelled or had revised timetables, creating delays estimated at around 10 minutes. The Suffragette line was partially suspended between Barking Riverside and South Tottenham.

No rail services stopped at stations including Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow Queen’s Road, Leytonstone High Road, Leyton Midland Road,

Wanstead Park, Woodgrange Park, Barking, and Barking Riverside during the disruption. London Overground operations were limited to a shuttle service between Gospel Oak and South Tottenham only.

c2c services between Barking and Grays via Dagenham Dock, Rainham, and Purfleet were suspended due to the incident. Authorities expect the disruption to continue through the rest of October 23 and likely the entire weekend.

Emergency Response and Investigation

GBR Anglia confirmed receiving the initial report of the partial freight train derailment at Barking station at around 13:10. The company, working alongside the British Transport Police and emergency services, reported no injuries resulting from the derailment.

Investigators

from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch are onsite examining the incident. Railway engineers are also assessing the damage caused to infrastructure to determine the necessary repairs and safety measures.

Passengers traveling through Barking station have been advised by GBR Anglia to check updates before traveling due to ongoing disruptions expected through the weekend. Apologies have been issued for the inconvenience caused by the incident.

Affected Routes and Service Changes

The derailment impacted key segments of East London’s railway network. London Overground services were confined to run only between Gospel Oak and South Tottenham. c2c suspended all services running between Barking and Grays via Dagenham Dock,

Rainham, and Purfleet.

Stations without any service calls included Blackhorse Road, Walthamstow Queen’s Road, Leytonstone High Road, Leyton Midland Road, Wanstead Park, Woodgrange Park, Barking, and Barking Riverside. Delays and cancellations across these areas have affected passenger travel plans throughout the region.

The cause of the freight train derailment remains unconfirmed, and a timeline for the full restoration of services has not been provided. Assessment of the track and surrounding infrastructure is ongoing as engineers work to resolve any damage.

Separately, two London stations were recently shortlisted for Britain’s best station award, illustrating the region’s ongoing focus on rail infrastructure

improvements amidst this disruption.
