Norwegian Cruise Line’s ship Norwegian Sun has canceled its scheduled port call in Sydney, Nova Scotia, on October 21, 2026, because adverse weather slowed its progress during the transatlantic crossing. Captain Teo Radun confirmed the itinerary change in a letter to passengers on October 19, stating the vessel would bypass Sydney and sail directly to Halifax, Nova Scotia.
Revised Itinerary and Schedule
The Norwegian Sun departed Southampton, UK, on October 12, 2026, with initial stops in Le Havre, France; Cobh, Ireland; and Belfast, Northern Ireland before crossing the Atlantic. The vessel is now expected to arrive in Halifax at 8:30 a.m. on October 22,
2026, advancing the original 10:00 a.m. arrival time by 90 minutes. The ship will depart Halifax at 7:00 p.m. the same day, adding an extra full day at sea compared to the original itinerary. The cruise remains scheduled to dock in New York City at 7:00 a.m. on October 24, 2026.
Passenger Impact and Excursion Adjustments
Passengers booked for Sydney will no longer visit the port and received automatic cancellations of shore excursions arranged through Norwegian Cruise Line. Refunds have been credited to onboard accounts with no action required. Those wishing to book new excursions in Halifax can do so at the Shore Excursions Desk
on Deck 5. The earlier Halifax arrival grants passengers an additional 90 minutes ashore compared to the original schedule.
Official Response and Safety Assurance
Captain Teo Radun apologized for the itinerary disruption and stressed that no safety concerns affected passengers or crew. He noted that weather conditions would continue to be monitored closely during the voyage to Halifax to ensure passenger safety.
This itinerary change underscores challenges faced by cruise operators navigating North Atlantic routes where weather conditions can impact scheduling. Norwegian Sun’s reroute aims to maintain safety while keeping to the broader planned timeline through to New York City.
