Italy fully restored its air traffic capacity on October 16, 2026, following overnight issues with the data transmission network that supports the country’s air traffic control services. The disruption forced ENAV, the Italian air navigation company, to reduce aircraft handling in Italian airspace by as much as 50 percent earlier in the day. This capacity drop prompted flight delays and cancellations at major airports including Rome Fiumicino, Milan, and Bergamo.
ENAV Response and Restoration of Capacity
To mitigate the situation, ENAV switched its operations to a secondary satellite network, enabling a gradual recovery of air traffic handling throughout the day. The company confirmed that flight operations
remained safe during the disruption. ENAV also ruled out any cyberattack as the cause of the system failure. By later on October 16, full operational capacity was re-established across Italian airspace.
