Carnival Cruise Line completed a 35-day dry dock modification to reduce the funnel height on its cruise ship Carnival Freedom at Chantier Naval de Marseille in Marseille, France. Alongside the funnel adjustment, the vessel’s casino was redesigned, adding more than 100 gaming machines. Updates were also made to the video arcade and retail spaces, and accessibility improvements were implemented throughout the ship. A new “From Sea to Shining Sea” crest was added to the ship’s bow during the refurbishment.

Return to Service and Previous Funnel Fires

Carnival Freedom returned to service on October 9, 2026, departing from Barcelona, Spain, on an eight-day Mediterranean cruise. This was followed

by a 13-day Carnival Journeys transatlantic sailing preceding the ship’s arrival in Florida. The vessel experienced two funnel-related fires prior to the modification: one in May 2022 while docked at Grand Turk and another fire in March 2024 near the Bahamas. After the 2024 fire, Carnival Freedom canceled two cruises to conduct funnel repairs. Its funnel had previously been replaced during a 2023 dry dock in Cádiz, Spain, retaining the signature winged funnel design.

Scheduled Port Moves and Future Itineraries

Carnival Freedom is set to arrive at Port Canaveral, Florida, on October 30, 2026, where it will operate cruises through May 2027. Following this period, the

ship will relocate to Norfolk, Virginia, arriving on May 23, 2027. From Norfolk, Carnival Freedom’s itineraries will include six-day Bahamas cruises stopping at Celebration Key, Nassau, and Bimini, along with six-day Bermuda sailings. Additionally, eight-day Eastern Caribbean cruises will visit Amber Cove, Grand Turk, RelaxAway, and Half Moon Cay. Canadian ports in future itineraries include Halifax, Sydney, Saint John, and Charlottetown.

Cruise Season Reservations and Unknown Modification Details

Carnival has opened bookings for the 2028-29 cruise season departing from Norfolk, Virginia, offering voyages lasting six to eight days to The Bahamas, Bermuda, the Eastern Caribbean, and Canada through April 2029. While Carnival confirmed the funnel height has

been lowered to allow access to more ports, the company has not disclosed the exact height reduction or specified which previously inaccessible ports Carnival Freedom can now visit.
