On October 16, 2026, numerous Italian airports experienced flight delays and cancellations triggered by faults in the data transmission network supporting air traffic control. Enav, Italy’s national air navigation service provider, identified these faults overnight between October 15 and 16. Despite the detected issues, normal air traffic management without reduced operating capacity was maintained until 6:00 AM.

Flow Management Measures Introduced Due to Persistent Faults

At 6:00 AM on October 16, Enav implemented flow management procedures, temporarily reducing the capacity to handle aircraft in Italian airspace. This step aimed to uphold the highest level of operational safety amid increasing air traffic and ongoing network problems. Enav emphasized the

necessity of these measures to prevent potential risks and confirmed that the reduced capacity is temporary.

Flight Disruptions at Major Italian Airports

Flight operations at Rome Fiumicino airport included at least four cancellations on routes to Milan Linate, Riyadh, Tirana, and Trieste. Other flights from the same airport experienced delays reaching up to 60 minutes. Additional delays and cancellations were reported at Milan Linate, Milan Malpensa, and Naples Capodichino airports, all of which were affected by the network fault impacting air traffic control systems.

Passenger Impact and Ongoing Response

Passengers at the affected airports faced disruptions on October 16, 2026, with multiple flight cancellations and moderate delays. Airport operators urged passengers

to monitor their flight status directly with airlines. Enav ruled out connections between the network faults and any hacker attacks or sabotage. The organization is actively investigating to determine the root causes and restore full operational capacity as soon as possible.

Enav stated, “From 6:00, in view of the steady increase in air traffic and the persistence of the faults, in order to continue guaranteeing the highest level of operational safety, flow management measures have been introduced, which mean a temporary reduction in the capacity to handle aircraft in Italian airspace.” Prior to this, normal management of air traffic continued

without any capacity reductions despite the detected faults.
