Disney Cruise Line officially named its upcoming ship Disney Imagination, a Wish-class vessel scheduled to begin operations from Tokyo, Japan in spring 2029. The ship will measure approximately 140,000 gross tons and include around 1,250 staterooms.
Collaboration with Oriental Land Co. for Japan Market Adaptations
Disney Imagination will be managed by Disney Cruise Line Japan, a business brand operated under license by Oriental Land Co., which also runs Tokyo Disney Resort. The ship’s onboard experiences will feature adaptations designed specifically for Japanese guests, including modifications to facilities, cuisine, entertainment, and original elements tailored to local preferences.
Design and Construction Details Including Signature Stern Sculpture
Walt Disney Imagineering developed the ship’s design, while the vessel is under construction
by Meyer Werft at its shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. Continuing Disney Cruise Line’s tradition, the ship’s stern will showcase a sculpture featuring Ariel, Sebastian, and other characters from The Little Mermaid, with Ariel depicted using her “dinglehopper” to form the ship’s name.
Onboard Offerings and Passenger Experience
Set to operate year-round in Japan, Disney Imagination will offer families Disney-themed entertainment, dedicated children’s and teen areas, and adult-only spaces. The ship will incorporate venues and experiences seen on Disney Wish, with special adjustments for the Japanese market. Details on specific restaurants, entertainment shows, or other venues remain unannounced.
Disney Cruise Line’s Expansion in the Asia-Pacific Region
Disney Imagination builds on the Wish-class design used
for its sister ship, Disney Wish, and follows the upcoming Disney Believe, due to begin sailing in December 2027. Disney Cruise Line Japan operates as a Disney-branded cruise business by Oriental Land Co. to serve the Asia-Pacific market while tailoring offerings to cultural preferences.
