Disney Cruise Line revealed the name of its latest cruise ship, Disney Imagination, which is scheduled to begin sailing from Tokyo, Japan in spring 2029. This vessel will be the first Disney ship based in Japan year-round, marking an expansion of Disney’s cruise operations into the Japanese market.
Wish-Class Sister Ship with German Construction and Disney Design
Disney Imagination is part of the Wish Class, making it a sister ship to Disney Wish. The ship is currently under construction at Meyer Werft shipyard in Papenburg, Germany. The vessel’s design is developed by Walt Disney Imagineering, continuing Disney Cruise Line’s signature creative approach inspired by Disney storytelling.
Ship Specifications and Environmentally Friendly Power
The ship will
measure approximately 140,000 gross tons and offer around 1,250 staterooms for passengers. It will be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), supporting Disney’s efforts to incorporate cleaner energy sources into its fleet.
Disney Cruise Line Japan Operated by Oriental Land Co. with Custom Guest Adaptations
Disney Imagination will operate under Disney Cruise Line Japan, a branded cruise business managed by Oriental Land Co., the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort under Disney license. Onboard features, including facilities, food, entertainment, and original elements, will be adapted specifically to the preferences and cultural expectations of Japanese guests. This approach aligns with other major cruise lines tailoring ships for Japan with amenities like Japanese baths and in-room
tea sets, although Disney has not confirmed specific amenities yet.
Thematic Stern Featuring The Little Mermaid Characters
The stern of Disney Imagination will showcase sculptural designs inspired by Disney’s The Little Mermaid, including characters such as Ariel and Sebastian. Ariel will be depicted using a “dinglehopper” to write the ship’s name, continuing Disney Cruise Line’s longstanding tradition of themed character sculptures on the back of their ships.
Entertainment and Onboard Experiences Planned
The ship will offer Broadway-style entertainment, character encounters, dedicated spaces for children and teenagers, adult-only areas, and themed dining and beverage experiences. Specific details regarding restaurants, show titles, or themed venues have not been disclosed.
Launch Timeline Relative to Sister Ship Disney Believe
Disney Imagination is planned to
launch roughly two years after Disney Believe, another Wish-class ship scheduled to begin sailing in December 2027. Both vessels build upon the design and guest experience foundations established by Disney Wish.
