Tropical Storm Rachel and Hurricane Simon threaten Mexico’s Pacific Coast, leading cruise lines to alter planned routes and schedules in early October 2026. The National Hurricane Center reported on October 9 that Rachel is forecast to approach northern Baja California and extreme southern California on October 10. Simultaneously, Hurricane Simon is expected to make landfall on Mexico’s central coast as a major hurricane by October 11.

Cruise Itinerary Changes Due to Storms

Cruise operators Carnival Cruise Line and Virgin Voyages modified itineraries for vessels scheduled to visit Mexican and U.S. ports. Carnival Radiance cancelled its port call at Cabo San Lucas on October 9 to avoid

rough seas caused by Tropical Storm Rachel. Virgin Voyages rerouted Brilliant Lady’s October 10 sailing from Los Angeles, removing planned stops at Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta. Instead, the ship is visiting Santa Barbara and San Diego in California, and Ensenada in Mexico.

Safety Concerns Drive Route Adjustments

The port of Cabo San Lucas depends on tender boats for passenger transfers between ships and shore. Rough sea conditions from Tropical Storm Rachel and Hurricane Simon make tender operations hazardous, prompting cancellations of visits. Carnival Cruise Line noted it monitored both storms closely before rerouting Carnival Radiance. Virgin Voyages emphasized passenger and crew safety

in its decision to revise Brilliant Lady’s itinerary.

Passenger Compensation and Travel Advisory

Virgin Voyages announced onboard and future voyage credits for passengers affected by Brilliant Lady’s itinerary changes. Each passenger receives $100 in onboard credit and a $200 future voyage credit. Travelers in RockStar and MegaRockStar accommodations are eligible for $200 onboard credit and $300 future voyage credit per person. The cruise line communicated the compensation via email. Passengers facing weather-related itinerary changes are advised to review travel insurance policies covering severe weather risks.

Official Forecasts and Traveler Guidance

The National Hurricane Center’s update at 6:30 p.m. ET on October 9 detailed the trajectories of Tropical Storm Rachel and

Hurricane Simon. Travelers on Pacific cruise itineraries in early October 2026 must accommodate potential adjustments as storm paths evolve. Cruise lines prioritize safety in rerouting ships and modifying port calls. Authorities recommend consulting the National Hurricane Center for the latest storm developments to remain informed during these disruptions.
