Tropical Storm Rachel and Hurricane Simon have affected Mexico’s Pacific Coast in early October 2026, prompting multiple cruise itinerary changes to ensure passenger safety. Rachel is forecast to reach northern Baja California and extreme southern California by the night of October 10, while Hurricane Simon is expected to make landfall on Mexico’s central coast on October 11, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Cruise Itinerary Adjustments by Carnival and Virgin Voyages
As of 6:30 p.m. ET on October 9, 2026, at least two cruise itineraries were changed due to weather threats. Carnival Cruise Line rerouted the Carnival Radiance and canceled its scheduled port call at Cabo San Lucas
on October 9. Virgin Voyages altered the Brilliant Lady’s October 10 itinerary, replacing stops in Mexican ports including Cabo San Lucas, Mazatlán, and Puerto Vallarta with visits to Santa Barbara and San Diego in California, and Ensenada, Mexico. Virgin Voyages had previously made similar itinerary changes due to Hurricane Polo, which also affected Royal Caribbean’s Navigator of the Seas.
Operational Challenges at Mexican Ports
Cabo San Lucas and other Mexican ports rely on tender boats to transport passengers from anchored ships to shore. Rough sea conditions caused by Tropical Storm Rachel and Hurricane Simon make tender operations unsafe, forcing cruise lines to skip these stops.
Ports on Mexico’s Pacific Coast face these risks, leading cruise lines to prioritize safety by rerouting or canceling visits.
Passenger Compensation and Official Safety Priorities
Virgin Voyages has offered affected passengers onboard credits of $100 per person and a $200 Future Voyage Credit per person. Passengers in RockStar and MegaRockStar accommodations receive $200 onboard credit plus $300 Future Voyage Credit per person. The cruise line stated, “After carefully considering the latest forecast, we’ve made the decision to adjust our planned route. Your safety and the safety of our crew always come first.”
Industry Response to Weather-Driven Itinerary Changes
Weather-related itinerary changes are routine safety-first decisions by cruise lines including Royal Caribbean, Carnival,
and Virgin Voyages. Compensation for itinerary changes is provided as a courtesy but is not required. Travelers are advised to stay flexible as ports may be swapped or schedules rearranged, and to consult the National Hurricane Center for updates during the October 2026 Pacific storm activity.
