Southwest Airlines experienced significant operational disruptions on the morning of October 9, 2026, with nearly 900 flights delayed and 43 canceled nationwide by 9:15 a.m., according to FlightAware data.
System Outage at Vendor Amadeus Causes Disruptions
The delays and cancellations were caused by a brief system outage stemming from an interruption at Southwest’s vendor Amadeus, which supports the airline’s reservation system and related aviation products. The outage affected essential functions such as boarding pass printing and scanning via the mobile app.
Dallas Love Field Affected but Less Severely than Nationwide
Southwest’s hub at Dallas Love Field experienced 56 flight delays and seven cancellations as of 9:15 a.m. on October 9, reflecting a lower degree of disruption
compared to the nationwide impact. Lauren Rounds, a spokesperson for the City of Dallas Department of Aviation, reported that Love Field’s operations team was briefed on intermittent internal network outages that impaired boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning.
Southwest Airlines Continues Manual Operations During Outage
In response, Southwest Airlines continued manual baggage checks and boarding procedures throughout the outage period. A Southwest spokesperson said, “Southwest experienced a brief interruption due to a system outage at our vendor, Amadeus. The airline continued to check baggage and board flights manually while full functionality was restored. We apologize to our Customers for any inconvenience and are working to get
them to their destinations as quickly as possible. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the Safety of our Customers and Employees.”
Southwest relies on Amadeus for critical reservation system functions, highlighting the airline’s dependence on vendor-operated systems. System outages of this type can have immediate and widespread effects on flight schedules and passenger processing.
