Southwest Airlines experienced a system outage on October 9, 2026, caused by a disruption in its vendor Amadeus’ systems. The outage interrupted Southwest’s reservation system and related network functions, including boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning, leading to operational issues across the airline’s network.

By 9:15 a.m. on October 9, Southwest had nearly 900 flight delays nationwide and canceled 43 flights. Dallas Love Field, the airline’s headquarters and main hub, recorded 56 delayed flights and seven cancellations during the same period, showing a lesser but still notable impact.

During the outage, Southwest Airlines manually processed baggage checks and passenger

boarding to maintain operations. The airline worked actively to restore full system functionality while prioritizing safety and customer service throughout the disruption.

A Southwest Airlines spokesperson said, “The airline continued to check baggage and board flights manually while full functionality was restored.” The airline also apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized, “Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees.” Lauren Rounds, spokesperson for the City of Dallas’ Department of Aviation, stated that Southwest informed Dallas Love Field’s operations team about the intermittent internal network issues affecting boarding pass and mobile app scanning.

Southwest relies

on Amadeus for critical operational systems, including reservations and other flight services. The outage on October 9 exposed vulnerabilities in these dependencies and caused widespread flight disruptions across the United States.
