Southwest Airlines experienced a brief system outage on October 9, 2026, caused by a disruption in its vendor Amadeus’ system, which provides the airline’s reservation system and other critical products. The outage occurred during the morning hours, impacting the airline’s nationwide operations.
Nationwide Delays and Cancellations Impact Southwest Operations
By 9:15 a.m. on October 9, nearly 900 Southwest Airlines flights were delayed across the United States, while 43 flights had been cancelled, according to flight tracking site FlightAware. At Southwest’s primary hub, Dallas Love Field in Dallas, Texas, 56 delays and 7 cancellations had been reported as of the same time, reflecting less severe disruption at the
airline’s headquarters and main operations base.
Operational Disruptions Affect Boarding and Check-In Procedures
The system outage caused intermittent internal network issues that interrupted boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning. In response, Southwest continued to check baggage and board flights manually while the airline worked on restoring full system functionality.
Official Statements Address Outage and Recovery Efforts
A Southwest Airlines spokesperson stated the airline faced a brief interruption due to the outage at vendor Amadeus and confirmed the manual operations carried out during recovery: “The airline continued to check baggage and board flights manually while full functionality was restored.” Southwest apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized that customer and employee safety remains its top
priority. Lauren Rounds, spokesperson for the City of Dallas Department of Aviation, confirmed Southwest had alerted the Love Field operations team about the intermittent network disruptions affecting boarding pass printing and app functions.
