Southwest Airlines encountered a brief system outage on the morning of October 9, 2026, leading to delays on nearly 900 flights and cancellations of 43 nationwide. At Dallas Love Field, the airline’s headquarters and primary hub, 56 flights were delayed and 7 canceled as of 9:15 a.m.
Cause and Nature of the Outage
The disruption stemmed from an intermittent internal network outage linked to Southwest’s vendor Amadeus, which manages the airline’s reservation system and related products. The outage affected boarding pass printing and mobile app scanning, disrupting passenger processing and flight operations.
Operational Response and Official Statements
While working to restore full functionality, Southwest continued manual baggage checks and boarding procedures
to maintain operations at Dallas Love Field. A spokesperson for the airline apologized for the inconvenience and emphasized the priority of customer and employee safety. “We apologize to our customers for any inconvenience and are working to get them to their destinations as quickly as possible. Nothing is more important to Southwest than the safety of our customers and employees,” the spokesperson said.
Lauren Rounds, representing the City of Dallas Department of Aviation, noted that operations at Love Field were relatively less affected compared to the nationwide impact.
Southwest Airlines partners with Amadeus for critical reservation and operational systems. The
airline’s headquarters at Dallas Love Field anchors its extensive network across the United States, which experienced widespread delays during the outage.
