
Tamil Nadu participated in Tourism Expo Japan 2026 held from September 24 to 27 in Tokyo to promote its heritage, culture, landscapes, and tourism experiences to the Japanese travel market.
Inauguration and Key Officials
The Tamil Nadu Tourism booth was officially inaugurated by H.E. Nagma Mohamed Mallick, Ambassador of India to Japan. The event also featured Dr. S. Swarna, Principal Secretary, Tamil Nadu’s Tourism, Culture and Special Initiatives Department; Mr. Suman Billa, Additional Secretary and Director General of the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India; and Ms. Suchi Tyagi, Secretary of Tourism, Government of Rajasthan.
Cultural Heritage and Buddhist Connections
Tamil Nadu emphasized its rich heritage including seven UNESCO
World Heritage Sites and its Buddhist links with Japan. Historic port cities like Kancheepuram, Nagapattinam, and Poompuhar were highlighted for their roles in ancient Buddhist maritime exchanges. Bodhidharma, associated with Kancheepuram, was noted for his journey to China and importance in East Asian Buddhism.
Ecological Diversity and Literature
Dr. S. Swarna outlined Tamil Nadu’s cultural and ecological diversity, referencing the ancient Sangam literature describing five ecological landscapes: Kurinji (hilly), Mullai (forest), Marutham (agricultural), Neithal (coastal), and Palai (arid). She stressed this diversity offers travelers varied experiences from trekking to coastal living, reinforcing Tamil Nadu’s commitment to sustainable tourism development while engaging Japan’s travel industry.
Tourism Products and Promotional Campaigns
The state promoted its diverse tourism offerings such as hill stations Kolli Hills, Jawadhu Hills, Yercaud, beaches along its 1,076 km coastline, wildlife parks, biosphere reserves like Nilgiris and Gulf of Mannar, and opportunities for water sports and safaris. Festivals including Pongal, Jallikattu, the Indian Dance Festival, Tamil Nadu International Balloon Festival, and Kite Festival were presented as cultural attractions. Tamil Nadu also highlighted 74 GI-tagged products representing regional crafts and cuisine.
Registrations opened for the Discover Tamil Nadu – International Edition 2026-27 familiarization trip scheduled from January 12 to 20, 2027, coinciding with the Pongal festival season. Up to
ten international participants including social media influencers, travel journalists, media representatives, travel agents, tour operators, and destination management companies will be selected to experience and promote the state.
Trade Engagement and Investment Opportunities
Tamil Nadu Tourism held discussions with Japanese travel trade representatives to increase tourist arrivals and develop customized travel experiences. Investment and partnership opportunities were presented in heritage hospitality, eco-tourism, adventure tourism, and experiential travel sectors. Efforts focused on enhancing tourism and cultural ties between Tamil Nadu and Japan through bilateral exchanges facilitated by shared spiritual and Buddhist heritage.
