More than 230 flights were delayed and 43 canceled at Boston Logan International Airport as of 3:10 p.m. on Tuesday amid ongoing runway construction and severe weather, according to FlightAware data.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that inbound flights faced average delays of 86 minutes due to the construction work. A ground delay was initiated at noon Tuesday and is set to remain in effect until 1:59 a.m. Wednesday to regulate arrivals.
Nor’easter Impacts Continue After Weekend and Monday Disruptions
The disruptions followed a nor’easter that affected the region over the weekend into Monday, causing hundreds of flight cancellations and delays at Logan. On Monday alone, inbound
flights were delayed by over five hours on average after the FAA implemented a ground delay.
Massport, the authority managing Logan Airport, attributed the ongoing operational challenges to the combined effects of the nor’easter and runway construction.
FAA and Massport Operational Measures and Traveler Advisory
The FAA’s ground delay requires aircraft to wait at their departure airports before takeoff to space out arrivals at Logan. This measure has been active since Tuesday noon and will continue past midnight to early Wednesday morning, aiming to reduce congestion caused by reduced runway capacity.
Massport advised passengers traveling to or from Logan to check their flight status with their airlines before
proceeding to the airport, given the significant delays and cancellations.
Runway construction at Logan is expected to be completed sometime in November, according to Massport, with disruptions anticipated until then.
